This page is my attempt to be upfront about some of my quirks, beliefs, and work style aspects that you should know about when we commit to working together. 🙂

• I am a firm believer in and advocate for Open Science principles. I pledged myself to follow a set of principles in my work. In particular, I pledged to

  • Publish only in open-access journals or conferences, at least when I am the lead author
  • Share code and other artifacts for all my work
  • Use CRediT and publish a contributor’s record with all my research outputs (a recent example, Appendix A, page 17)

• I value quality over quantity.

• Generally, I favor operational research—i.e., addressing practical problems—over pure academic novelty. Concretely, I do not care if the tools and methods I use are well-known as long as they are well-suited for the problem we want to solve.

• Visual presentation matters a lot to me. In particular, I am very susceptible to

  • Mischosen plot types
  • Unclear graphics
  • Bad slide design

  If we work together, expect me to push to polish those.

• I forget stuff; do not hesitate to remind me if you expect something from me that does not come.

Most specifically, for the students I supervise

• Do not wonder whether I have time to help you. Ask. I will tell you if I don’t have time or expect you to solve your problem alone.
• Punctuality matters. Of course, being late once in a while happens, but
  • Please let me know so I do not wait for you for nothing.
  • Do not make it a habit; if our meeting time is too tight for you, let’s change it so you can make it on time.
• I am (very?) demanding with the students I work with, but you should know that my main driver is to help you progress and mature as a scientist.
